Hi everyone, I am a temporary foreign worker, skilled category B, my work permit is valid till 2011. I want to bring my wife and kids to Canada. And I know that my wife can apply for a open work permit. But I have no idea, what documents are needed, besides filling up the form. If anyone can explain this process to me, I would appreciate a lot. Thanks

Very simple. I also have a skilled work permit and I brought my wife and kids. Here is the simplest way to bring your family!!! Have you wife apply for a Visa (phillippines). When applying, have your wife inform the Visa office that she will be joining you. I would advise you to either fax or email your work permit to her so that she can present it to the Visa office. Once your wife lands in Canada, have her go to immigration to process her work permit. All she will need is a copy of your work permit to facilitate the process. Not many people know that you can also apply for a work permit at the port of entry!!!!

This is really helpful to me since I am in the same boat..I am in Japan now and my husband is already in Canada on a skilled worker permit. He wants us to join him.So should I apply for a Temporary Resident visa only from my country of origin which is Japan now( I am Filipina though) and just apply for the open work permit at the port of entry? Like my husband only got a positive opinion and TRV before he left for Canada and got his work permit at the port of entry. Does it take long?..Anyway, I will be bringing also my school age children, should I apply for study permit for them too outside Canada like in the Tokyo Embassy or can I also apply for these together with the open work permit in the Immigration office? How long does it take? If I apply for an open work permit in Japan, is there a possibility they wont accept us?

Hi vickos ! my husband is a contract worker in canada. I read at the CIC website that we can folow him and stay there temporarily within the validity of his permit. I just want to know if the kids' education are free if we enrolled them in public school? My eldest is in grade six here in the Philippines.many thanks.

I remember looking this up once before, iryn, but can't now find where I got the information. However, most public school boards will not charge a fee to parents who are in Canada on a temporary employment or student visa. Just don't say that you're here on a VISITOR visa, as there may be a charge in that case - and that isn't true of your status since your husband has a work permit.
Hope this helps! If you want to check it out further, look for the website of the school board in the city/region where he lives. There should be an email address shown for enquiries.
