Sponsorship Questions

Hello Everyone
I'm a newbie here so I thought I would pop in and post a message. I'm a born and bread Canadian, and my boyfriend is a citizen of the UK. We are currently in the process of getting the last bits of info together to apply for sponsorship and Perm. Residency.
I won't lie, there is a lot more involved then what I expected! We are applying for common-law sponsorship, and hoping all goes well. We've been together 3 years now, and have been living together for nearly 2 years.
We are applying from In Canada, as he is here at the moment for 4 months. When he arrived here he received a visitor record, that he has to show when he leaves the country in September. We had some problems when he arrived in Toronto, because they thought he was coming here to work (previously had a years work visa in 2007) so we had to convince them he wasn't working. That's when we explained about the sponsorship, and that we are doing it from In Canada
When your applying from In Canada, you aren't allowed to leave the country once you've sent the application out. But, with him having this visitors record, he has to show it when he leaves the country (which he won't be allowed to do) so we are going to have to apply for an extension. We checked out the website today, and it says we have to apply for the extension 30 days before his flight, but it takes 110 days to process. Doesn't seem to make sense to me, unless he can stay in the country while they are processing the extension.
Has anyone ever experienced this before or know someone who has?
Thanks for reading!
