Which area in Vancouver do you suggest that a family should stay? Close to nursery schools, shops, playgrounds etc..Secondly, which areas are affordable and which areas should be avoided?

in vancouver, burnaby and surrey are good places for families. So is kerrisdale. These places are very close to downtown, but are more spacious with more parks and more detached homes for families.
you may have to go further out - perhaps to white rock - before you can get to find really affordable housing.
avoid east vancouver because it is not the best area of town. Downtown, west vancouver is the best, but it is very, very expensive.
if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you AshleeK your willingness to help is much appreciated. The wife and I visited Vancouver about a month ago and Vancouver is absolutely beautiful. We need help on deciding in which areas to live. We have 2 small kids so therefore it should ideally be close to nursery and primary schools.

I will look at Burnaby, Surrey and Kerrisdale – the web should be able to provide me with info. We were impressed with North Vancouver.

Do you suggest to rent a house with a garden or an apartment? Ideally we would require a house with a garden so that the kids can play.

Hi Francois,

I just noticed that this questions went unanswered, I apologize.

I would probably suggest renting an apartment in an area near parks (which is pretty much everywhere in the Vancouver area) until you can afford to buy a house of your own. A short term rental can be set up in advance, ensuring you a place to stay when you arrive, and will give you the ability to get to know your neighbourhood and those around you before you decide on a bigger committment of buying a house & having a mortagage.

hope that helps!

The only place in the Vancouver area that should be avoid is the east end of downtown vancouver. It is not the greatest neighbourhood, and you definitely wouldn't want to be living there with kids. Most the rest of the city, and the surrounding area, is very welcoming to families.

avoid living in downtown vancouver if you want to keep costs low. A really nice community is surrey. There are many schools, so it is good for families. it is more affordable because it is about a 25-35 mins drive from downtown.

most of vancouver is like a great big outdoor playground, so it won't be hard for your kids to find places to play!
